Meet Daniela in New York!
"Even if it sounds or feels scary, it’s something you should do."
Why did you choose to go abroad?
I always want to have the experience of my country, growing as a person and as a professional.

How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?
I have had many cultural experiences since I started the program. One of the most noticeable differences is the time people eat lunch and dinner. In Peru, I usually had dinner around 8–9 p.m., but here people often eat between 5–6 p.m. Another difference is punctuality. In Peru, when there is an important event scheduled for 8 p.m., people often arrive late. Here, Americans are usually very punctual. One of the most awkward moments for me was when I had to introduce myself. In Peru, it is common to greet people with a kiss on the cheek when saying hello or goodbye, but here that can feel unusual or even awkward.

Could you take us for a day in your life? What is your routine?
My day usually starts at 6 a.m. I get ready for work and take the subway at 8:20 a.m. I arrive at the office at 9 a.m. and start my day. My tasks vary depending on the day. Sometimes I work on plans, do 3D modeling, visit job sites, or attend meetings with clients and my bosses. After finishing work, I go back home, cook for the next day, and go to my indoor cycling class. When the class ends, I return home and get ready to go to sleep.

How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?
This experience is helping me become more independent. When I was in Peru, I depended on my parents most of the time. Here, I am responsible for everything on my own.

Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
I think everyone should have an opportunity like this. It not only helps you grow professionally, but it also allows you to see different perspectives and learn how to live independently in your early 20s. I always recommend that people leave their countries and step out of their comfort zones to have an experience like this. Even if it sounds or feels scary, it’s something you should do.

If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?
GRATEFUL, CHALLENGED, PROUD.
